1921-2012
Except for her four years at Douglass College and a brief stint as a high school history teacher in Paulsboro, New Jersey, Jane Letzkus Scott had always lived in Stone Harbor where she raised a family, ran a business and gave back in full measure to her community.
Jane was born at the Margaret Mace Hospital in North Wildwood in September 1921 to Clarence and Gladys Letzkus. She graduated from Middle Township High School. Her father founded the Stone Harbor Lumber Company in the 1920s of which Jane eventually became part owner and President.
Along with former Stone Harbor Councilman Jack Fitzpatrick, Jane helped establish the Stone Harbor Museum to chronicle the borough’s history. She served the museum in numerous capacities including President, Vice President and Curator.
Jane was active in the Auxiliary of Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital, now known as Cape Regional, organizing a variety of fund-raising projects. She was responsible for starting the Cherie Corner and ran this popular gift shop for many years.
Jane was an active member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church, a church her grandparents helped establish in Stone Harbor. She served as Sunday school teacher and President of the church’s Women for Service.
Jane was a proprietary member of the Stone Harbor Yacht Club and served as its historian. She was also involved with the Stone Harbor Women’s Civic Club and the Wetland’s Institute.
Jane L. Scott was honored by the Cape Women’s Resource Fund at their 11th Annual Women’s Equality Day Tea on August 26, 2001 at the Stone Harbor Women’s Civic Club.
